When selecting a suitable laser, it is practically the most important thing to know what the maximum desired range of the laser is.

For a few centimetres or decimetres, a 1mW or 3.5mW laser, in any colour, is usually sufficient. It makes virtually no difference whether it shines on wood, stone, or an ordinary piece of iron. A 5mW laser beam from this distance will be visible even in daylight. If the same laser and material are placed in a workshop, hall or other area where direct sunlight (or reflected light) does not shine directly on the material, the line will be visible up to 5m.
